The verdicts are mixed for Season 5 of House, M.D., which was recently released on DVD. Whether they liked Season 5 or not, fans of the program agree that it was unique. For instance, Cameron and Chase were not included as heavily, and some viewers believed that the season was “cheesier” than earlier seasons.
Those that liked Season 5 report that the episodes connect with the audience better than in other shows, and that the audience learns more about how House’s is impacted by his personal demons. The overall opinion is that if Hugh Laurie is in the show it will continue to be a complex, smart television program. Even physicians who watch the show say that despite its sometimes overblown presentation, the program is very affecting and does give the viewers an idea of the processes a doctor experiences when contemplating a complex diagnosis.
Fans who were rather under-whelmed by House M.D. Season 5 complain that the writing varies in quality: the season starts out strong, goes through some boring episodes mid-season, then picks up steam during the remainder of the season. Something that did not appeal to many viewers was what they believed to be a blatant and clumsy way of planting the seeds of a P.I. spinoff show by utilizing a character that was not pertinent to the season. Other objections were that the storylines were less interesting and that variable quality writing prompted House’s trademark biting wit to cross the line into unneeded shock value occasionally.
The 24 shows making up Season 5 allow non-work and workplace boundaries to shift repeatedly among the major characters. Special appearances in Season 5 included eljko Ivanek, Mos Def, and Carl Reiner. The DVD collection includes extras covering changes in Dr. Cuddy’s life, how the program is cast, and the level of realism in the stories. The collection also contains a 100th episode celebration, and extra explanation for the show about the patient with the “locked-in syndrome.”
Between those fans who enjoyed Season 5 and those who were more critical, the vast majority say they still are entertained by the show a lot and are happily awaiting House, M.D., Season 6.
