There’s been many things named the Devil Wears Prada – a movie, a novel, a rock band, and even a TV series. Here’s more information about the movie.
In 2003 everyone was reading the Devil Wears Prada. As with many successful novels it inspired Hollywood to create a movie. Novels become movies because of the built in audience. Like the movie or hate it, people were familiar with the novel will often go to see the movie. So that gives Hollywood an idea that there will be a base audience. That reduces the risk that a movie will lose money. Lower risk is a good thing in the movie business.
The film doesn’t follow the novel exactly. Many changes are made. Just as a high-rise building is based on concrete. But a building isn’t concrete. The building is made of different materials. So if you read the novel, don’t be surprised to see differences in the plot.
Here’s the plot. A journalism graduate takes a job as the assistant to a prominent fashion editor. She’s kind of out of place in the fashion world. She has to take on characteristics of the people she once disliked in order to keep the job. When a coworker who often makes fun of her makes a big mistake Andrea saves the day. Her boss asks her to attend a Paris fashion show. In Paris she watches as her boss ruins someone else’s career.
Her eyes open to the fact that she’s becoming like her boss. She leaves the magazine to return to her boyfriend and a job as a journalist. The editor and others at the magazine now respect her. In fact it’s her former boss who gives her the recommendation that gives her the job at the newspaper.
It was very popular. It’s possibly due to two reasons. As mentioned before, it had a read made audience. More than likely many former readers went out to see the movie. Secondly, it’s a good story with a moral. The message is that good character leads to success.
It’s worth the time to see or read the Devil Wears Prada.
